New book explores local fascination with cars
Winnipeg is known nation wide as the cruising capital of Canada, and in his new book, "Class of 2009", local webmaster, photographer and freelance automotive journalist Jordan Morningstar explores Manitoba's cruising phenomenon from the inside.
Morningstar has spent the last year shooting photos at numerous auto events, and has assembled a stunning variety of images that not only showcase local cars, trucks and motorcycles, but also the eclectic variety of individuals who keep the wheels turning in Canada's motor city.
"Manitoba has an amazing car scene, and a book about it was long overdue," said Morningstar. "Everyone in the local cruising community has worked very hard to make the scene as exciting and vibrant as it is. All the people involved, from club organizers to vehicle owners, and even supporters and fans, they deserve this book."
There are hundreds of local rides found in the more than 80 pages of colour photographs, while Morningstar's clever commentary offers a refreshing look at Manitoba's fascination with speed and beauty.
This is Morningstar's first book; he not only shot the photographs and wrote the text, he was also the publisher. More than 1500 copies were printed in Altona by Friesens Corporation, and the book will sell for $25.00. Morningstar is also the webmaster and editor of SundayCruiseFever.com, a locally based online hot rodding magazine that has become a favourite destination for gearhead's from Thompson to Thailand. His articles and photographs have also been featured in numerous publications, including Canadian Hot Rods magazine.
The book's official launch party will take place Saturday at the downtown Pony Corral Restaurant on St. Mary Avenue. The event begins at 7 p.m., and Morningstar will be on hand to sign copies and talk about the book. "Class of 2009" will also be available for purchase at the Pony Corral's Grant Park location every Sunday evening throughout the summer, and at select car shows throughout Manitoba.
