Ford packs Expedition with high-tech features

The 2018 Ford Expedition is loaded with technology, including a 360-degree camera for blind-spot detection, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go ability.

The all-new 2018 Ford Expedition— which began arriving at dealerships in late December — is an ultra-modern machine.

“All the technology Ford has to offer can be found in the 2018 Expedition,” says Vickar Ford sales representative Henry Clyke. The new model comes with an updated EcoBoost 3.5-L twin-turbo V-6 engine and a new 10-speed automatic Allison transmission.

Clyke’s colleague at Vickar Ford, Devyn Read, added the Expedition is available in a choice of four trims — the base XLT, the Limited, the Limited Max and the Platinum edition.

The eight-passenger SUV has a longer wheelbase and is both slightly longer and wider, yet it’s 136 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.

Some of the new technology available includes mounted screens on the headrests for passengers in the rear rows; wireless charging for your phone; Wi-Fi for up to 10 devices; Sync Connect to use FordPass on your phone for starting, locking, or locating your vehicle remotely; as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Read also points out the ride improvements, achieved via Ford’s continuous controlled damping, which reduces the shock to the system and the vehicle when going over potholes.

The way it works, Read says, is that when the front tires hit a pothole, the vehicle’s computer adjusts the dampers to their stiffest setting and prevents the wheel from falling as far into the pothole. A signal from the front wheel provides a pre-warning to the rear wheel, well before it reaches the pothole, allowing the rear tires to adjust accordingly.

Ford has also given the Expedition a panoramic roof above the first two seating rows and a flat-load floor below, which can accommodate large objects with the push of a button to fold both rows flat.

Safety features include 360-degree camera for blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, lane keeping and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go ability.

The price for the 2018 Expedition ranges from a base of $60,000 to $85,000 for a fully loaded, top-of-the-line Platinum trim.

Read says customers are coming in to the dealership daily to ask about the 2018 Expedition.

“We have a full range of trims in stock,” he says. “And if we don’t have what you are looking for, we can get it quickly.”

Top Manitoba Ford sales reps


Scott Pollett, a perennial sales star, was Manitoba’s top Ford of Canada peak performer in 2017. He finished first in sales among Ford sales reps in Western Canada (out of just over 500 sales reps), having sold more than 300 cars last year.

“I usually sell around 275 new and used vehicles a year,” says the 38-year industry veteran, who joined the Mid-Town team in 2008. “Last year was one of my best years ever.”

Joining Pollett at the peak performer level for 2017 is his Mid-Town Ford colleague Reed Boyer, who finished sixth in Western Canada with around 200 sales last year. Boyer has been with Mid-Town for 14 years.

A number of other Ford sales reps earned a ranking in the second level as Ford summit award winners. Among them were Pollett’s and Boyer’s fellow Mid-Town Ford sales rep Terry (Turbo) Haliuk; Shawn Henke and Henry Clyke at Vickar Ford; Murray Elke at Capital Ford; John Forbes at River City Ford; and Jason Young, Ray Cantelo and Al Twerdochlib at Kelleher Ford in Brandon.

Twerdochlib reports he sold more than 200 new models last year — somewhat above his average of about 180. He has been with Kelleher Ford for 25 years and achieved summit status for 24 years.

“I’m already off to a great start for 2018,” he says. “I have sold 15 new vehicles as of the middle of the month.”

Young and Cantelo have reached the summit level 14 and eight times respectively. They both average about 100 new car sales a year. Cantelo notes that only the top 10 per cent of Ford sales reps across Canada qualify for summit status.

“It is rare for a smaller store such as ours to produce three summit members,” Young points out. “It’s tough for us competing against sales reps in larger stores in Saskatchewan and Alberta.”

For Elke at Capital Ford Lincoln, this is his 20th visit to the podium — so to speak — in 28 years as a Ford sales rep. While his yearly average is just under 100, last year he sold almost 140 new vehicles. He reports that he, too, is off to a great start for 2018 with 20 new car sales by mid-January.

Henke at Vickar Ford has achieved summit status 13 times in 15 years in sales. Last year, he sold 157 models.

Clyke earned summit status last year for the first time in his six years with Vickar Ford, with just over 100 new car sales. He notes the number of new cars sold is not the only measure in determining summit and peak performance achievers. Customer service is also taken into consideration.

Haliuk joined the Mid-Town team last year after many years working for another Ford store, and has achieved summit status many times over the years. He and his team (Samantha Schacht and Glenn Proutt) were averaging about 230 sales a year prior to coming to Mid-Town, and have since registered a substantial sales increase.

River City’s John Forbes is the newest and youngest member of the Summit achievers. He reached the coveted level in just his second year in auto sales. Last year, he sold close to 100 new models and he was off to a good start for this year. By mid-January, he had already registered 11 sales.
