It has been an exciting few months for local Hyundai dealers with three 2017 models rolling in one after another and more models on the way.
First up was the redesigned 2017 Elantra. Winnipeg Hyundai sales manager Ryan Dyck noted the new Elantra sells for between $15,999 and $28,799 (for the fully-loaded model) and is Hyundai’s top-selling model.
The 2017 Santa Fe Sport made its debut locally in mid-July.
“They changed a few things and added more standard content,” Dyck says of the popular crossover.
The new look includes a redesigned front fascia with a new grille and headlamps, new tail lights and exhaust tips, new wheel designs and optional new LED daytime running lights.
Among new features for 2017 are an available power height-adjustable passenger seat, an Infinity audio system, an upgrade of Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics, a 360-degree camera system, a standard rearview camera and the availability of adaptive cruise control with pedestrian detection and automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning and adaptive headlamps.
The base model is powered by a 2.4 L, four-cylinder engine that puts out 185 horsepower and 178 lb.-ft. of torque. Dyck reports the 2017 Santa Fe is available in a choice of 16 different trims and with either five or seven seats.
The price for the vehicle ranges from $28,599 to $48,299 (plus freight and pdi).
Meanwhile, the 2017 Tucson is expected any day now, Dyck says. The new compact crossover has more head and leg room and more cargo space. Available options are lane-departure warning system, LED headlights, and blind-spot monitoring.
The base SE model is powered by a 2.L four-cylinder engine that puts out 164 horsepower and 151 lbs-ft. of torque. The Eco, Sport and Limited trims are equipped with a turbo-charged 1.6L, four-cylinder engine that produces 175 horsepower and 195 lbs.-ft. of torque.
The price range for the new Tucson is $24,799 to $38,599.
New general managers
Parkside Ford and Winnipeg Hyundai have new general managers.
Mark Carver — a 20-year auto-industry veteran — joined the Winnipeg Hyundai team May 1. His entire career has been in import sales.
“My previous employer was great,” Carver says, “but I felt that it was time for a change. It’s nice being part of an independently-owned store. Winnipeg Hyundai is the last independently-owned Hyundai store in the city. I appreciate the family atmosphere here.”
Bruce Broughton is the new general manager at Parkside Ford.
Glen Daman new head of West Coast auto group
In May 2015, after 25 years largely with the Crown (formerly Dilawri) Auto Group — and four years as president, Glen Daman decided it was time for a change.
Now, refreshed after some time off, Daman has returned to the auto industry as president of the Applewood Auto Group — as of July 1 — on the West Coast.
“My wife, Donna, and I wanted to do something else for a while,” he says. “So we spent a year travelling throughout North America and Europe.”
The Damans had also wanted to try life on the West Coast. So they purchased a condo in Langley, B.C.
It was over dinner a few months ago with long time friend Darren Graham, the founder and CEO of the Applewood Group, that Graham offered Daman a position originally as group vice-president — a position Daman started on April 1.
“Darren and I have known each other for years through the auto industry,” Daman says. “I took the job initially on a trial basis. Applewood is a great company with a good group of GMs and strong teams.”
The Applewood Group includes Nissan and Kia stores in Surrey, a second Kia store in Langley, a second Nissan store in Richmond and the Original Applewood Motors Super Centre, which sells used cars.
“We expect to sell about 1,000 pre-owned models this year out of our Super Centre,” Daman says.
While the Damans love being on the West Coast, Glen notes they still have their home in Winnipeg and come back monthly to visit friends and family.
Mike Shaw back at Waverley Auto Mall
After a year away from auto sales, industry veteran Mike Shaw is back at the Waverley Auto Mall. At the beginning of August, Shaw joined the sales staff at Gerry Gordon Mazda.
Shaw is celebrating his 10th year in auto sales, mainly selling imports.
“What I like about working for Gerry Gordon is that Gerry is on the sales floor every day talking to customers and staff,” Shaw says. “As well, the product is great and the store has a great reputation.”
