Honda has spruced up its extremely popular CR-V with fresh sheet metal and a new turbocharged engine.
Based on what we’ve seen under the skin of the recently redesigned Civic, the 2017 CR-V gets its kick from a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Of course, the CR-V’s added weight over the Civic results in a slight power bump; this turbo-four pumps out 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque, while the only transmission option is Honda’s continuously variable automatic (CVT).
With the new turbo-four and CVT combination, Honda promises the 2017 CR-V will deliver best-in-class fuel economy, although official ratings haven’t been released just yet. The turbo-four will come standard on EX trims and higher, while the base CR-V LX soldiers on with the outgoing 2.4-L four-cylinder engine. All-wheel drive will be available across the lineup.
For 2017, the CR-V also has a growth spurt. Its wheelbase and overall length have been stretched over the outgoing CR-V, leading to more cargo space and rear legroom.
Among the improvements are more upscale materials, an optional seven-inch touch-screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and — perhaps best of all — a physical volume knob replacing the finicky slider. Here’s hoping this tweak makes its way into more Honda models.
Outside, the CR-V gets new sheet metal, cribbing styling cues from its bigger brother, the Pilot. Full LED headlights are standard on the top-of-the-line CR-V Touring, while the rest of the lineup makes do with LED daytime running lights. Also available for 2017 is a hands-free liftgate and pretty much everything you can expect from today’s lineup of active safety tech, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and a forward-collision alert.
Expect Honda to announce full pricing details closer to the 2017 CR-V’s on-sale date this December.
